Let’s talk about how to find your niche!

I recently created a quiz that helps you to identify what type of course you should create based on your skills, goals and audience. So if you’re brand-spanking new to courses and don’t know what course you should create, grab your kombucha and take the quiz to find out!

A handful of creators have gone through the quiz already and one of the questions that’s come up has been “But I don’t have a niche?”

Yep. I totally get it.

As a course creator, you want to make sure that you choose the right course topic that lights you up and has the biggest profit potential for your business.

So with that, let me share with you my fail-proof 4 step system on how to find your niche, so that never again will “I don’t have a niche” be your reason for not moving forward.

But before we dive in. Let me address one big elephant in the room.

One of the reasons creators get tripped up with identifying their niche, isn’t because they don’t know how to choose a niche. It’s because of FEAR.

It’s their own fear, blocks and self-sabotage that holds them back.

Woah talk about going deep, right?

And if you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I like to keep it real.

So here’s the deal:

Creators will think “but, I don’t want to put myself in a box”….

“If I specialise then who am I limiting or saying no to?”…

Or they say “Well Vicky, I’m not an expert yet”… “I’m not the best”.

Ultimately they believe “I’m not enough” so they get stuck in this never-ending cycle of learning more, creating more content, giving more, until they think they’re “ready”.

*clears throat* — But let me tell you this. You’re never going to wake up one day feeling ready or confident.

Sometimes you have to work backwards and if you have a vision of creating an online course empire, you need to niche down now, my friend.

The good news is that when you choose your niche, it isn’t set in stone. You can pick a niche that seems like a good fit for you right now and you can always pivot later.

It’s better to choose a niche now, because at least you’re moving forward and this will help you to create clarity and progress.

Plus, I don’t think there’s such a thing as going down the wrong path. When you choose a path, you’ll see whether it’s right for you and it will take you to the right path that you’re meant to be on.

It’s better to choose a niche now, because at least you’re moving forward and this will help you to create clarity and progress.

Who knows where you’re going to be 2, 3 or 5 years from now. It’s likely that your niche is going to evolve overtime as you evolve and that’s ok. Relax into the uncertainty and just give it your best shot.

So, let’s travel, step-by-step, through how to identify your niche so that by the time you’ve followed these steps, you’ll be crystal clear on your niche.

Find your zone of genius

The first step is all about working from your zone of genius. Gay Hendricks argues that to expand our perceived comfort zone of success we have to live more in our zone of genius.

This is often the presence, flow and sense of bliss we experience when we’re doing something that fulfils us.

So, what is your zone of genius?

To clarify even further, here are a few questions:

  • What do you love to do that you’re naturally gifted at?
  • What do you do in your business where time flies?
  • What would you do all day long for free?

When you express your natural gifts you create alignment and you feel more confident to share your expertise because it comes natural to you.

For me, I get a lot of enjoyment out of empowering people with marketing strategies. I can talk about online marketing for hours and I feel like I can help a lot of people by teaching them how to create more leverage in their business with courses.

But I also love talking about mindset. And after being in the trenches and helping clients achieve five-figure launches, I’ve learned that mindset is MASSIVE.

Anyone who I’ve ever worked with who is struggling to put themselves out there online with courses or programs is usually stuck because of overthinking or false beliefs.

This is because we’re not wired for entrepreneurship and our negative gremlins will do everything they can to fight for safety and survival.

So, my zone of genius is the sweet-spot between online courses and mindset.

Identify your overall market

Once you have jotted down points on your zone of genius, you want to define your overall market. This is a broad starting point but it helps you to see which category your area of expertise belongs to.

Getting clear on your overall market will take you one step closer to nailing your niche and it comes in handy when you need to do market research.

Here are the different umbrella markets that my clients fall into:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Finance
  • Health, wellness & beauty
  • Lifestyle
  • Education
  • Love and relationships
  • Spirituality

For me, I put myself in the “entrepreneurship” category. Even though I do talk about mindset, my niche is online courses and my ideal audience who are interested in creating courses are going to be searching for content related to courses.

Define your unique focus

Ok, my friend, time to get more specific! This is where we get into the nitty-gritty of how to find a niche.

Let me guess. You’re thinking “but if I’m too specific I’ll lose out on so many people who want to buy from me”.

Scratch that and for a second think about one person you look up to.

Do they offer a buffet of different topics, or are they known for one thing?

Say for example, you wanted to get laser eye surgery would you go to a general medical practitioner or would you go to an eye specialist?

You’d go to an eye surgeon because they’re an expert.

In short, the clearer you are with your niche, your offer and your audience the less they will have to think and the easier it will be for them to make the decision to buy from you. If you don’t niche down then you can’t become the go-to expert. It’s as simple as that.

I want you to put in a stake in the ground and declare your area of expertise sooner rather than later.

Here’s some questions that will help:

  • What do you want to be the go-to person for?
  • What specific topics does your audience resonate with the most?
  • What areas in your overall market do you consider yourself an expert in?

Create a value proposition

Moving onto the final step, you want to create a value proposition.

A value proposition is super helpful for getting hyper specific on your niche because it pinpoints who you are serving, how you are serving them and why.

My favourite way to do this is with the fill-in-the-blank exercise.

I help ___ (who) do___ (what) so they can ___ (why)

Here’s mine:

I help rising leaders create sold-out courses so they can build a profitable and sustainable business and create more income, freedom and impact.

Now, it’s your turn. See if you can write a value proposition and see how specific you can get on the who, the what and the why. Don’t worry about getting it perfect. The most important thing about this process is cultivating clarity and courage around your niche.

Congrats you made it! Give yourself a pat on the back for getting this far and celebrate this milestone with a happy dance.

I hope this has given you a hearty dose of clarity and confidence to start owning your knowledge and expertise.
