You’ve probably heard the saying “the money’s in the list”.

And there’s a reason for it. It’s true.

There is INCREDIBLE power in an email list, which makes it essential for creating continuous growth.

It allows you to get your message seen by more people and grow a tribe of the right people who are already looking for a solution.

PLUS, it gives you a system that nurtures new people to your blog or business from value to the sale.

Not to mention, the power to sell your digital products on auto pilot (no matter what’s happening in your business or life!)

So, what’s the deal?

Well…the challenge is actually getting those email sign ups.

I hear it all the time from bloggers and entrepreneurs who have a tiny tiny email list who are struggling to get more email sign ups.

Many of these people are using the same kind of tactics — working really hard to create a great lead magnet only to find that it doesn’t work.

So if this is you and you’ve created a lead magnet but it isn’t working then you need to go back to the drawing board.

That’s why today I’m going to be sharing with you 8 smart ways to quickly get more email sign ups! Deal?

Create a compelling offer

If your lead magnet isn’t working, it’s probably because your offer is crappy.

You need to create a compelling offer so that your audience can answer “what is it?” and “what does it do for me?”

After all, if your offer is confusing or unclear, then you’re not gonna get many people signing up to your email list. Are ya with me?

So, you need to make sure that your offer includes things like…

  • Having a tightly written headline and sub-headline that answers “what is it?” and “what does it do for me?”
  • Articulating who the offer is for so that it’s personalised for a specific target market
  • Knowing the result that your offer providers (so that it becomes an easy YES for your audience!)
  • Depicting the features and benefits of the offer (so that your audience knows how it’s going to impact them)

So, you need to make sure that your offer includes things like…

So, if you haven’t given people a reason why to sign up to your list then you’re gonna struggle to get more email sign ups.

This is because people need to know the reasons spelled out to them so they know why it’s important.

Okay. Have you got a compelling offer yet? Because I’m a total broken record when it comes to having a compelling offer first.

Got a compelling offer? Excellent! Here’s more ideas to get more email sign ups.

After you’ve created your lead magnet you want to map out where you’re going to promote it and how often you’re going to promote it on social media.

You’ve probably heard of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

But there are other social media platforms that you can leverage to boost your email sign ups.

In fact, I recommend Pinterest for driving traffic to your email sign up form.

Why?

1) Pinterest users are ready to buy

93% of pinners use it to plan purchases. So, if you use Pinterest to drive traffic to your email sign up form, they’re more likely to purchase your paid offer and become a customer.

After all, you don’t just want more email sign ups, you want people to become customers so that they bring value to your business. Right?

2) Searches aren’t brand specific

Pinterest users are looking for something to buy but they don’t know who they’ll buy from so this gives an advantage to bloggers or small businesses who want to expand their reach.

And if you want to get more email sign ups, Pinterest gives you an advantage even when you don’t have an established brand!

But if you want to get more email sign ups, you need to post consistently on Pinterest. I’m talking 30 pins a day, in order to create consistent growth.

It sounds like a lot of work (and it is to start with) but once you get the hang of it it can be really powerful for driving email sign ups.

In fact, I schedule my pins in advance with Tailwind (affiliate link). I use Tailwind to pin up to 150 pins across multiple boards over multiple days.

Seriously, all I have to is dedicate one hour a week to schedule my pins and I have a system that grows my email signs for me. I LOVE it.

And if you want to promote your lead magnet in other places such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram then I absolutely recommend Smarter Queue!

Smarter Queue is another marketing unicorn that automates your posts. It’s easy to use and you can organise your posts into categories.

For example, I can organise my content based on blog posts, freebies, content upgrades and affiliate promos and product promos. This makes sure that all my content is being shared to my audience multiple times each day. (And it works like magic for getting more email sign ups!)

Reduce the number of clicks it takes to subscribe

Most people have their opt in form on their home page, which is great if people land on your home page.

But what if someone lands on your about page?

Or your blog post?

After all, if most of your traffic comes from your blogs and you’re not placing opt in forms there then you’re losing email sign ups. Yikes!

Don’t make this mistake dear. Include your opt in forms in 3 places on every page so that you’re maximising your email sign ups. Does that make sense?

If you look at my website for example, you’ll notice that I have my email sign up forms everywhere.

Even if you read one of my blog posts, you’ll notice that I have my opt in form in the top bar and in the sidebar widget.

Plus, I might create a content upgrade for that blog post and embed it into my blog post a few times so that I’m growing a targeted audience of people.

Oh!!! And I have a post footer opt in form beneath my blog post so that people can sign up to receive resources.

And one more thing! On my homepage I have an opt in form in my header so that when people come to my home page they are invited to sign up straight away.

Now, when you place your opt in forms on your website, you want to avoid the bog standard call to actions, such as “click here”, or “submit”. It’s boring.

Instead, use powerful call to actions that are filled with personality, such as “Heck yes” or “Gimme”. Can you see how that’s waaaay more compelling?

Have you noticed that I’ve created clear pathways on my home page? That’s right, once a visitor comes to my home page they can follow 3 paths. (Two of these lead to opt ins!)

Seriously, once you’re aware of this trick you can optimise your website for conversions and get email sign ups every. single. day. For reals!

And here’s a dozen more ideas of where you could place your opt in.

  • A ‘start here’ form in your menu navigation
  • ‘free resources’ form in your menu navigation
  • A scroll mat
  • Left sidebar (and one that stays stable when your site visitor is scrolling)
  • In your website header
  • ‘Light box’ pop up
  • ‘Slide in’ pop up
  • Screen filler
  • ‘In content’ form
  • A custom landing page for social media channels

But it’s worth testing out various opt ins to see which ones convert the best on your site.

As you can see, the opportunities are endless.

Content upgrades

If you’re a blogger or entrepreneur then you’ve probably heard about content upgrades.

If you’re a blogger or entrepreneur then you’ve probably heard about content upgrades.

They’re based on the idea that when you offer “upgraded” content on a blog post, you’ll drastically drive email sign-ups.

And this is true.

Content upgrades are a game-changer for increasing email sign ups.

The reason why content upgrades work so well for driving email sign ups is because the content upgrade is directly related to the blog post.

Let’s say for example, someone is reading a blog on ‘How to grow your email list with Pinterest’ and the content upgrade is ‘5 ways to grow your email list with Pinterest’.

In this case, they’ll be a far greater percentage of email sign ups compared to if the opt-in was ‘How to grow your online business’.

This strategy is waaaay more effective because it’s something that your visitor is already looking for. Are ya with me? Good!

This strategy is waaaay more effective because it’s something that your visitor is already looking for. Are ya with me? Good!

Now, if you want to create consistent growth, you need to create as many content upgrades as possible!

Technically speaking, you need to create a content upgrade for every blog post to drive maximum conversions.

“I have to create 30 content upgrades?!”

I hear ya! The big problem with this is that many bloggers or entrepreneurs don’t have the time and resources to do this.

So what do you do?

Instead of creating a million content upgrades, you can create ‘topic-specific’ content upgrades. (So you can use a content upgrade across an entire category of blog posts!)

So to do this on your site you need to take the following steps.

Step 1. Find your most viewed posts

Discover your top 20 viewed blog posts on your site. To do this, simply go to Google Analytics and look for patterns between your blog pages. Now, aim to organise these into 3-5 categories.

Not posted many blogs? Don’t sweat! Think about what paid offers you’d like to create in the future. For example, if you want to create a course to help people drive their website traffic with SEO then you might create a category called ‘SEO’.

Step 2. Create a content upgrade for each category

Once you’re clear on your categories, you want to create an informative piece of content for that post. This could be a guide, cheat sheet, checklist, an audit or a list of FAQs.

The key here is to create a piece of content that is going to add value and is going to be a no brainer for your website visitor.

Step 3. Offer a content upgrade with an opt in form

Now that you’ve created your content upgrade you want to promote it on your blog post. You could do this by embedding it in your blog post or using a light box pop up or slide in pop up.

Speaking of which, if you want to ignite your list building starting from today, download my banging workbook (and get a shot of confidence to continue attracting the right audience!).

Step 4. Send them a welcome email series

Some questions that I hear a lot are:

“How do I manage my email lists and content upgrades?”

“Do I need to create separate email sequences for my content upgrades?”

The answer is: it depends.

If you’re just nurturing your email list then no.

If you’re not selling a paid offer and you’re just nurturing your email list, you can get away with creating a generic welcome email sequence.

So, if you have 5 content upgrades but no paid offers, you would just need to create one welcome email series. This needs to be a sequence of 3-7 emails that you send to a subscriber over a period of one month. It would look something like this!

Then, after they’ve received a welcome email, you can send them a generic welcome email series.

This is how it would flow:

1 – A visitor reads your blog post on SEO

2 – They see a pop up on that page promoting your content upgrade

3 – They fill in their name and email address and sign up to your list

4 – You send them a welcome email with a link to the content upgrade

5 – You send them a series of 4-7 emails to add value on SEO and build trust with them

X= Your paid offer (e.g., SEO or email marketing course)

On the other hand, if you’re planning on selling them various paid offers, then you’ll need to create a topic specific welcome email series that leads to the paid offer.

For example, if you’re planning on selling an online course on SEO and email marketing then you’ll need to create a welcome email sequence to sell your SEO course and a separate welcome email series to sell your email marketing course.

This is how it would flow:

1 – A visitor reads your blog post on X

2-  They see a pop up on that page promoting your content upgrade on X

3 – They fill in their name and email address and sign up to your list

4 – You send them a welcome email with a link to the content upgrade on X

5 – You send them a series of 4-7 emails to add value, build trust and sell your paid offer on X

Does that make sense?

Exceeeelllent!

Use a scroll mat

Another way to get more email sign-ups is to create a scroll mat or welcome mat.

Basically, it’s an invitation to receive a juicy freebie as soon as someone arrives on your website.

For example…

I created a scroll mat that invites people to receive my core lead magnet, which is an ultimate starter kit to get 1000 email subscribers. I’ve recently implemented this so I’ll let you know how well it converts and update this blog post when I find out 🙂

Here’s a few things that’s worth noting:

  • It’s a page that’s free of distractions and it only gives them 2 options (1 to grab my kit and another to exit the page)
  • It’s well branded with my brand colours and fonts
  • It has a compelling call to action “grab it for free”
  • It gives reasons why people should sign up — grow a tribe of the right people who are ready to buy!

Oh!!! And creating a scroll mat for your website is super quick and easy. In fact, I designed this scroll mat with Thrive leads and it took me about 20 minutes. I tried other tools, such as Sumo but I found Thrive Leads waaay easier to use.

Email course

Now this is something that I haven’t tried myself yet but I’m planning one!

An email course can be a game-changer for driving email sign-ups because of the amount of value that it has.

The reason why they’re effective is because people LOVE to learn about new topics –especially when it’s actionable and they’re going to have a small win from it. Right? Right!

And because a multi-day course is such an irresistible offer, people are more willing to give their email address. So, you’ll see a higher percentage in email signs up compared to a generic freebie.

Oh! And it’s an incredible way to showcase your brand, mission and personality (which are all important factors that someone considers before buying from you!)

The idea behind an email course is that you offer a bunch of value-filled lessons over a period of 3-5 days.

And if you’ve got a paid offer, you can sell your paid offer throughout the email course. Pretty nifty right?

So, if you want to skyrocket your email sign-ups, definitely consider creating a free email course 🙂

Plus, you’ll dial up your leadership and credibility and you’ll be seen as the go-to person in your niche. Pretty sweet huh?

Create a giveaway

Another nifty way to get more email sign-ups is to create a giveaway.

If you’re a new blogger or entrepreneur and you want to get more email sign-ups fast, then giveaways can be a game-changer.

The idea is to incentivize people to sign up to your email list with a giveaway.

I mean if you want to become a better video storyteller then this giveaway is a no brainer!

Basically, people enter the giveaway on a platform such as Kingsumo with their email address and you can use this to drive email sign-ups and sell your paid offers!

And the reason why Kingsumo is effective for giveaway is because it has a viral sharing effect, so once a person enters the giveaway they have an incentive to share it with their friends.

Here’s a few things you want to consider before you create a giveaway:

  • The prizes need to be hyper-relevant to your audience so that your offer is irresistible
  • You need to have the right promotional strategy for your giveaway
  • You’ve gotta send the right series of emails after the giveaway ends, so that you prime your subscribers to become customers

Webinars

PLUS, they’re incredible for humanising your brand, so they’ll help your audience cultivate a deeper personal connection with you.

So, if you want to blitz your email sign-ups, I’d definitely consider doing a webinar!

The reason why webinars are so darn effective is because they have high perceived value (they’re literally a special event where people can connect with you more!)

Don’t forget, people love to learn about new topics — especially when it’s super informative!

And you don’t have to tell your audience everything they need to know on a particular topic. Typically, a webinar sheds light on the ‘what’ and an online course delves into the ‘how’.

In fact, you can do ‘pitch-free’ webinars where you simply create a information-packed webinar that delves into a particular topic.

Even if you don’t sell anything on your webinars, they’re amazing for driving email sign-ups.

One of the most powerful ways for increasing email sign-ups are webinars. Hands down!
